Making the major decisions before framing helps homeowners and builders avoid costly changes and compromised proportions later. Use this checklist to guide the early conversation, then confirm all system-specific requirements with the fireplace manufacturer, installer, and applicable codes.

1. Establish the fireplace’s role in the room

Begin with how the room should function. Decide whether the fireplace is the primary focal point, one part of a larger feature wall, or a secondary element supporting another view.

Review these questions before settling on a location:

  • Where do people enter and move through the room?
  • What should the principal seating area face?
  • Will the fireplace be visible from adjoining spaces?
  • Could windows, doors, or traffic patterns compete with it?
  • Would a centered, corner, two-sided, or outdoor application serve the space best?

Study important sightlines from the entry, kitchen, and primary seating positions—not only from directly in front of the fireplace.

2. Coordinate the furniture and television plan

A fireplace wall should be planned with the furniture, not separately from it. Confirm the likely sofa and chair arrangement before the wall layout is finalized.

If a television will share the wall, determine whether it belongs above the fireplace, beside it, or elsewhere in the room. Consider comfortable viewing height, heat-related manufacturer requirements, mantel placement, and the proportions of the full composition.

3. Size the fireplace for the room

A fireplace that appears adequate on a plan can feel undersized once it is placed in a tall or expansive room. Evaluate the opening, surround, hearth, and chimney or chase in relation to:

  • Ceiling height
  • Wall width
  • Overall room volume
  • Furniture scale
  • Adjacent windows, doors, and built-ins

The complete fireplace composition should hold its place visually without overwhelming the room.

4. Confirm the system, venting path, and clearances

The fireplace type affects framing and utility decisions. Align the project team on whether the plan calls for a wood-burning, gas, electric, or masonry system before the surrounding construction is locked in.

Before framing, confirm:

  • The approved venting direction and path
  • Chase or enclosure requirements
  • Required clearances to framing, mantels, and finish materials
  • Combustion-air or other system-specific needs
  • Access required for installation and future service

These requirements vary. Always follow the selected manufacturer’s documentation, the qualified installer’s direction, and applicable building and fire codes.

5. Account for finish thickness and transitions

Brick, stone, plaster, tile, and other surrounds do not have the same depth or installation assembly. The intended finish should be known early enough for the framing and substrate to support it properly.

Flag these design decisions:

  • Surround material and installed thickness
  • Full-height finish versus a limited surround
  • Hearth height, depth, and material
  • Mantel depth, thickness, and mounting height
  • Transitions to flooring, drywall, cabinetry, or exterior materials

6. Coordinate built-ins and architectural details

Built-in storage, shelving, niches, benches, arches, and trim can make the fireplace feel integrated, but only when they are included in the early layout. Confirm their widths and depths alongside the fireplace rather than fitting them into leftover space.

If masonry will continue to the ceiling or wrap a corner, make sure the structural support and installation sequence are understood before work begins.

7. Plan utilities and controls

The project team should identify required utilities and their preferred locations during rough-in planning. Depending on the selected system, this may include gas, electricity, outlets, lighting, switches, controls, or accessories.

Confirm where controls should be accessible, how cords or components will remain concealed, and whether future service access is required.
